Allsop Outdoor Education Center

Dedicated in 2001, the Allsop Outdoor Education Center was made possible through a generous donation by Robert and Elizabeth Allsop. The 7,000 square foot facility can accommodate up to 72 guests in 18 sleeping rooms and over 120 guests for meetings.  It is considered one of the finest Scouting facilities in the region.

The Allsop Center serves as the summer camp staff lodging facility in the summer.  For the remainder of the year, it serves as an indoor camping facility for scout units.  It is also utilized by businesses, students, and non-profit organizations for strategic planning retreats, team-building retreats, or general meetings outside of the office.

We encourage you to help us advertise this space to your units, businesses, and other organization.  The proceeds from the use of the facility go toward improving the Scouting program in the Hawkeye Area Council.  For a printable brochure, click the link below.  Outside organizations should call the Council Service Center at 319-862-0542 for information on reserving the facility.

Conference Facilities

The Allsop Outdoor Education Center has three conference rooms, a great room and two breakout conference rooms. The 1368 sq. ft. great room features a stunning 20′ X 20′ Stone City limestone fireplace, and can host 80 individuals. Four of the 18 residential rooms can be converted into two 365 sq. ft. breakout conference rooms. Each breakout room has a capacity of 20 individuals. All three rooms have Internet capabilities. The great room also is equipped with a retractable projection screen built into the ceiling.  The entire building is wired for sound. Other equipment is available upon request and availability.

Dining Facilities

Guests at the Allsop Outdoor Education Center may use the Dakin Dining Hall during their stay. It is just a short walk from the Allsop Outdoor Education Center, and seats approximately 300 individuals. Groups have the option of having their functions catered by Hy-Vee or preparing their own meals. Groups opting to prepare their own meals will be charged a reasonable fee for using the kitchen. Groups using Hy-Vee catering may have their meals served at the Allsop Outdoor Education Center or Dakin Dining Hall.  There is a small kitchen in the Allsop Center as well.

Lodging Facilities

If you are looking forward to a nature retreat but not necessarily to roughing it, Howard H. Cherry Scout Reservation is just the place for your group. The Allsop Outdoor Education Center provides affordable housing. The center has 18 rooms with four beds in each. All rooms are furnished with two sets of bunk bed, 2 wardrobes, as well as a desk and chair. Each room is wired for Internet usage. Groups may use the rooms as quads, triples, doubles, or singles, as they see fit. Although each room does not possess its own bathroom, private showers are available in the shared hall restrooms. Laundry facilities and light preparation kitchen facilities are also available.

Activities

Do you need to have a meeting but still want to have a little fun?  Numerous activities are available for guests at the Allsop Center.  The AEGON Challenge Course provides low and high ropes courses for fun team-building activities.  The Aegon Climbing Facility is also available for Scouting and non-Scouting groups.  To reserve staff for these activities, please call the Council Service Center at 319-862-0542.
