United Way Funding Cut Minimize

United Way of East Central Iowa
Cuts Boy Scout Funding

The United Way of East Central Iowa has moved to a Community Impact Model, and has chosen to reduce the allocation for the Hawkeye Area Council by $116,500 annually (a 54% reduction in their previous allocation.).  This represents an 8.1% reduction in our operating income, and was unexpected. The full effect of the reduction begins January 1, 2009, when our annualized allocation will go from $209K to $92K.  Reports in the Cedar Rapids Gazette and other media regarding the full impact of the reduction were misleading.

The Executive Board of the Hawkeye Area Council has formed a Task Force to address this issue.  It is the intent of the Board to maintain programs and staff, and diversify our funding sources to mitigate this potentially devastating situation.

The United Way will maintain its policy of accepting donor designated gifts, and they will not be used as part of our allocation.  Your support during this difficult period will be greatly appreciated.

Join Cub Scouting!
Having Fun…   Learning New Skills…   Building Character…
More Than Just Another Activity!

Dear Parents/Guardians:

This is your son’s invitation to join the country’s largest youth organization.  He can become a member of the Boy Scouts of America.  Scouting is fun-filled, educational, and a program with a purpose.  Scouting helps develop boys’ values of duty to God, Country, and others.  Scouting’s aims of character building, citizenship training and fitness have remained unchanged since the program began in 1910.  Boys have fun and at the same time they develop leadership skills by serving as boy leaders.

The Boy Scouts of America has a program for your son:

TIGER CUBS is for boys in the first grade.  The program focuses on activities for a parent-boy team from each family; each boy must have a parent partner.  They meet monthly in one of the boy’s homes and follow a pre-selected theme of their own choosing.

CUB SCOUTING is for boys in the 2nd, 3rd grades.  Cub Scouts have a Den Meeting each week, usually in the Den Leader’s home.  Once a month, all of the dens in the Cub Scout Pack come together for a Pack Meeting where they see exhibits and displays, have skits, ceremonies, and songs, and receive their awards and badges.  Cub Scouting is a family and neighborhood centered program.  4th and 5th graders join the excitement of WEBELOS, and work to become prepared to join the adventures of Boy Scouts during the spring of their 5th grade year.
