Wood Badge C1-173-12

Jan 20, 2010 -

Wood Badge Course C1-173-12

What is Wood Badge and why should I attend this Training?

Wood Badge was originally presented by Lord Baden-Powell as a means of strengthening and preserving the Scouting movement throughout the world. Since its inauguration in the United States in 1948, thousands of Scouter’s have attended Wood Badge and have considered it a mountaintop experience in their Scouting careers.

Today, Wood Badge courses provide advanced leadership development. The objective of Wood Badge is to demonstrate in a practical way the "aims and methods" of Scouting and to develop Scout spirit through a program of learning sessions and activities. During the course, you will live Scouting and be exposed to the application of leadership and Scouting skills as they are applied in the development of leaders and youth. This training will help you not only in Scouting but also in your careers, your church and other group situations you are involved with.

But more importantly, during your Wood Badge experience, you will create lasting relationships with other Scouter’s.

This is a unique "Cluster Course" that is being hosted by the Winnebago Council, but will offered to six surrounding councils, and will take place at Camp Wakonda. If you were thinking about Wood Badge and missed the course offered in Hawkeye Area Council in 2011, this is a great opportunity to participate in a unique course, with staff members from all six councils.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Matching Grant Received to Support Handicapped-Accessible Improvements at Boy Scout Reservation in Central City, Iowa

(Cedar Rapids, IA, January 9, 2012) The National Order of the Arrow Committee has awarded the Hawkeye Area Council, Boy Scouts of America a $5,000 matching grant to purchase a swimming pool chair lift and renovate a wilderness camping area to ensure handicapped-accessibility at the Howard H Cherry Scout Reservation near Central City, Iowa.

The proposal written by youth members of the Order of the Arrow was the highest funded project out of 15 awards presented nationwide and will allow the in-ground swimming pool to become completely handicapped accessible using a mobile lift.  In addition, the grant will support the renovation of a campsite, including pouring two handicapped-accessible concrete pads, a concrete pad under a covered pole shelter, and accessible walkways between facilities.  The total project cost will be $10,000 with the local Cho-Gun-Mun-A-Nock Order Lodge matching the national grant through individual donations of cash and materials.

Hawkeye Area Council currently serves over 50 youth with physical or cognitive disabilities through the Trailblazers program.  These youth fully participate in all of Scouting’s experiences, while learning in a tailored environment suited to their individual needs.  Thanks to this grant, many of these youth will be able to fully participate in camping activities this summer.

The Order of the Arrow, a service organization of the Boy Scouts of America, honors individuals with exemplary service to Scouting.  The Cho-Gun-Mun-A-Nock lodge is the local chapter affiliated with the Hawkeye Area Council, Boy Scouts of America and has been in existence for 60 years in Eastern Iowa.  The Order of the Arrow strives to be an integral part of the Boy Scouts of America providing resources to promote and advance Scouting at all levels.

Since 1999, the National Order of the Arrow Committee has annually selected lodges from across the nation to receive matching service grants.  For 2012, Hawkeye Area Council was one of 15 lodges to receive a combined total of $40,000 in grants.
