The American Legion of Iowa has always been a strong supporter of Scouting, and that support continues today.  The Department of Iowa offers scholarship opportunities for Boy Scouts through the Eagle Scout of the Year program and recognition for adult scout leaders through the Adult Boy Scout of the Year, Adult Cub Scout of the Year, and the Square Knot Award.

Cedar Rapids, IA - Eagle Scout Floyd Russell Richardson III of Swisher, Iowa has been selected to receive one of only four national $20,000 Mabel and Lawrence S. Cooke Scholarships.  The endowment provides a maximum grant of $20,000 and pays up to $5,000 per year for four years.

Over 5,000 applications were submitted for different Eagle Scout scholarship programs.  Mr. Richardson's selection as a Cooke scholarship recipient represents recognition of his superb record of accomplishments.

Mr. Richardson, while only seventeen years old, is taking coursework at Iowa State University.

The National Eagle Scout Association, under the direction of the National Development Office, Boy Scouts of America, selects the winner of this scholarship by a committee.  This committee also determines the numbers and size of all scholarships to be granted each year to deserving Eagle Scouts graduating from high school.

Besides being a high school graduating senior, applicant must be currently registered in the Boy Scouts of America, have been granted the Eagle Scout Award prior to submitting the application, and have an SAT or ACT score acceptable to the standards set by the committee.  Additionally, each candidate must have demonstrated leadership ability in Scouting and a strong record of participation in activities outside of Scouting, possess a financial need and have the endorsement of a volunteer or professional Scout leader who knows the applicant personally.

The Hawkeye Area Council is the local council responsible for the delivery of Scouting programs in eastern Iowa (Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Washington and surrounding areas.). The council serves over 7,500 youth each year.
